Runout on the rim of a coupling shows that the rotating parts are not properly centered with each other, meaning the coupling halves are not held in true alignment or a component is loose. As the assembly spins, any deviation from a perfect circle or coaxial path becomes evident as runout, which points to issues like misalignment, looseness in mounting, a bent shaft, worn keyways, or damaged bore surfaces. This geometric imperfection creates cyclic forces, leading to vibration, uneven wear, and reduced performance. It isn’t a sign of perfect balance, and simply addressing balance won’t fix it. It also isn’t solely about lubrication, since lubrication cannot correct misalignment or loose connections. To fix it, check and correct alignment, tighten fasteners to the proper torque, and inspect shafts, hubs, and keys for wear or damage.
